BPC-157

Also searched as: Body Protection Compound 157 · PL 14736

BPC-157 is a synthetic peptide of fifteen amino acids, derived from a sequence within a protein found in human gastric juice. It is stable in gastric acid, which is unusual for a peptide and is the reason it appears in oral as well as injectable research preparations. It is not an approved medicine anywhere.

What the research has looked at

  • Tendon and ligament healing in rat models
  • Gastrointestinal mucosal injury in rodent studies
  • Angiogenesis and blood vessel formation in animal tissue
  • Nerve regeneration following experimental injury in rats

This is a description of what has been studied, not a claim about what it does. Evidence level: animal studies only.

Legal position in the UK

Not a licensed medicine in the UKNot licensed as a medicine in the UK. It is not approved for human use, and it appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list (S0, non-approved substances). Supply for human consumption would be unlawful.

Handling and storage

Supplied as a lyophilised white powder. Reconstituted with bacteriostatic water and refrigerated once mixed. Sensitive to agitation, so the water is added down the vial wall rather than directly onto the powder.

Vial sizes: Commonly 5mg or 10mg per vial. Where a manufacturer supplies handling instructions, those take precedence over anything general.

Questions

Is BPC-157 approved for human use?
No. It is not licensed as a medicine in the UK, the EU, or the United States. It has not completed the clinical trial process required for approval anywhere.
What does the research on BPC-157 actually show?
The published literature is overwhelmingly animal work, principally rat models of tendon, gut and nerve injury. Those studies report positive findings, but animal results frequently fail to reproduce in humans, and there are very few controlled human trials to draw on.
Is BPC-157 banned in sport?
Yes. WADA lists it under S0, non-approved substances, which covers any pharmacological substance not currently approved for human therapeutic use.
