Disposing of needles in the UK
Used needles go in a proper sharps bin, never in household waste, never loose in a bottle. In the UK your council or GP practice can supply a bin and arrange collection, and many pharmacies operate a return scheme. Arrangements vary by council, so check yours before you start.
Why not just a bottle
A drinks bottle punctures easily and cannot be sealed permanently. The people at genuine risk are refuse collectors and sorting-facility staff, who handle bags by hand and have no idea what is inside. A sharps bin is rigid, sealable and unmistakably labelled.
Getting a bin in the UK
Ask your council first
Search your council's site for clinical or sharps waste. Many supply a bin free and collect it, some charge a small fee, and a few ask you to take it to a household waste centre.
Or ask your GP practice or pharmacy
Many will supply a bin and accept it back when full. Ring first rather than turning up with it.
Or buy one
A one-litre bin costs a few pounds online and lasts a long time at one needle per injection. You still need a disposal route for when it is full.
Never in the wheelie bin
Not in the general waste, not in recycling, sealed or otherwise.
Do not recap a used needle before binning it. Recapping is one of the more common ways people manage to stab themselves. Unscrew it straight from the pen into the bin.
When it is full
Fill to the marked line, never past it, then close the lid to the locked position. Once locked it does not reopen, which is the point. Arrange collection or take it to whichever facility your council specifies.
What else goes in it
Needles and syringes with needles attached. Empty glass cartridges and vials do not need a sharps bin unless broken, though many people put them in anyway for tidiness. Plastic pen caps and packaging are ordinary waste.
Questions
- Can I put a sharps bin in the normal bin when it is full?
- No. It needs collecting as clinical waste, either by your council, your GP practice or a pharmacy scheme.
- What if I have already been putting needles in the bin?
- Stop, get a proper bin, and put future ones in it. There is nothing to be gained from worrying about the ones already gone.
- Do you sell sharps bins?
- Not currently. Councils and pharmacies supply them, often free, which is cheaper than we could post one.
